Fresno State introduces Charlotte Morgan as new softball coach
Fresno State Athletics has introduced Charlotte Morgan as the sixth head softball coach in program history.

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- Charlotte Morgan was introduced Wednesday at the sixth head softball coach in Fresno State history. "We're not rebuilding this year," Morgan said. "We're redefining who we are."

Growing up in Moreno Valley, she was familiar with the program Margie Wright was building. She says her first college shirt had the FS Bulldog in the center.

"My journey led me to Alabama," she said. "I was the first Californian to go to that school...I wanted to take a chance to be different."

Morgan was a 3-time All-American for the Crimson Tide and was twice named SEC player of the year. She spent the last 5 seasons as head coach at CSU Northridge, leading the Matadors to a record of 109-126.

"I told Margie (Wright) I want to retire here. And I want to be the next legend coach to go down with those greats," Morgan said.

Athletic director Garrett Klassy says he consulted past coaches and players, Trisha Ford and Laura Berg, among many, on his search committee. "I think the coaches that have been successful here in the past have all had a little bit of the chip on the shoulder," Klassy told Action News. "The us against the world mentality. It's the Valley way."

Morgan is hoping to have Wright around her players soon and also wants to break attendance records while getting FS back to "that powerhouse that people don't want to play us."

"We have to get into the community. We have to get to maybe people who haven't been out here...if there's some people that have some bitterness, I have no problem. I will listen and let it all out, and then I'll say, 'Give me a chance.'

The new coach also said it will be crucial to recruit players from the Valley before recruiting out of state. "I want homegrown," she said. "They have the pride of being in the Valley. They dreamed about going here. So they'll go through the hard and then they'll help me teach our other players of what the Valley is about."

Morgan fills a position left by Stacy May-Johnson, who left for her alma mater, Iowa, after 4 years leading the 'Dogs. SMJ had a record of 112-106, including a 37-20 season in 2025.

FS won a national championship in 1998 and has made the NCAA Tournament 34 times, with its last appearance coming in 2021.
